Prolam products now backed by EPDs

In exciting news, Environmental Product Declarations are now available for a core range of Prolam glulam structural timber products, including posts, beams, and portals.

Prolam Managing Director, John Woodman, says the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) build on Prolam’s strong commitment to environmental responsibility and support for sustainable design and construction.

“This is a significant milestone for Prolam,” John says. “An EPD is an internationally recognised way for companies to be transparent about the environmental impact of their products.”

“By taking the step to develop EPDs, we are ensuring our customers have access to clear and reliable information about the environmental performance of our products.”

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that communicates credible environmental information about the life cycle of a product. Every EPD is based on data from a detailed environmental study called a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Prolam’s ‘cradle to gate’ EPDs cover everything from the sourcing of raw materials to manufacturing and packaging, giving a comprehensive picture of our products' environmental footprint including the amount of energy used and carbon emitted.

The EPDs are registered with EPD Australasia and the International EPD® System under the "Construction Products" and "Wood and wood-based products for use in construction" categories.

The benefits of EPDs

Having access to information about the environmental impact of building materials enables architects, engineers, and builders to make more informed choices.

“Prolam’s EPDs offer transparency, ensuring our customers can compare our products against others in the same category and select materials that best meet their project requirements and sustainability goals,” John says.

In addition, EPDs are recognised in the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) Green Star and Homestar voluntary sustainability rating systems. This means Prolam products with EPDs can be used to obtain credits for Green Star and Homestar projects.
