Sustainability

At Prolam, our commitment to Building Better Together starts with glulam timber solutions with solid eco-credentials that support sustainable building design and construction.

But our dedication to people and the planet goes beyond the products we make, to how we make them and our everyday practices.

EPDs

Prolam has independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), providing clear and comparable data about a product’s life cycle environmental impact to help make informed decisions about materials chosen.

Our ‘cradle to gate’ EPDs provide science-backed data on our products’ environmental footprint, including energy used and carbon emitted. EPDs can be used to obtain credits for Green Star and Homestar projects.

FSC Certified Manufacturer

Timber is the only truly renewable building material, especially when it is sourced from responsibly managed forests ensuring a continuous cycle of growing, harvesting, and planting.

An FSC Certified Manufacturer of 100% FSC and FSC mix timber products, Prolam glulam timber beams, posts, trusses, and portals are made from New Zealand plantation-grown radiata pine. The majority of the timber we source is grown in our local Tasman region.

Responsible manufacturing

At our manufacturing facilities in Motueka, we aim to ‘build in’ environmental responsibility and safety at every stage of the glulam production process.

Our cutting-edge milling and manufacturing technology ensures we minimise waste and maximise production efficiencies. We are also certified for ISO AS/NZ standards for quality and adhere to the relevant New Zealand workplace health and safety and environmental regulations.

Innovative solutions

We are constantly innovating and improving, evolving our products to support sustainable building design and construction.

Our glulam timber solutions, which include industry-first innovations such as the PLX20 Beam and PLX Portal, provide architects, engineers, and builders with new and more ways to integrate timber into residential and commercial buildings.

Wood is good

Strong, durable and versatile, there are so many ways engineered timber supports a more environmentally sound and energy efficient build. Building with timber contributes to the reduction of carbon in the environment. Trees absorb vast amounts of carbon as they grow and this is then stored for the entire life of the buildings it is used to build.

Adding to glulam timber’s solid eco-credentials is its extra strength and long life-span. It also has a high insulation rating which means homes and buildings need less energy to heat or cool – saving energy costs over the life of a building.

Supporting local jobs

Prolam is committed to fostering economic growth in our region.

From buying local and supporting New Zealand businesses across our supply chain to hiring local talent, we are creating employment and training opportunities and helping our industry and our region to thrive and grow.

Building resilient communities

Prolam is dedicated to supporting the communities where we live and work.

We are a Silver Sponsor of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, helping to provide an essential emergency service in our region. We also support Rapid Relief Team, a not-for-profit organisation that delivers emergency and disaster relief and youth, disability and homeless support programs across New Zealand and around the world.
